Microsoft Fixes Bug Causing Office 365 Deactivation Errors

microsoft

Microsoft has rolled out a fix for a bug affecting Office 365 users who were encountering random “Product deactivated” errors in their Microsoft 365 Office apps. This issue had been causing frustration for users across platforms like Microsoft’s community website and Reddit, with many reporting the deactivation warnings when using Office apps.

The Cause of the Error
The “Product deactivated” warnings were linked to license changes made by administrators, typically when switching subscriptions from Office 365 E3 to Microsoft 365 E3. The problem also occurred when users were moved between license groups, such as those in Azure Active Directory or synchronized local security groups.

In addition to these subscription changes, the error arose when administrators adjusted license or service plan settings, deleted and re-added users to license groups, or enabled/disallowed the “Latest Version of Desktop Apps” service plan under the Microsoft 365 subscription.

Microsoft’s Resolution
This week, Microsoft announced that it had successfully patched the issue on its end. According to an updated support document, the company’s engineering team rolled out a service-side fix to resolve the unexpected product deactivations.

Temporary Fixes
For customers who have yet to receive the patch, Microsoft has provided several temporary fixes:

  • Reactivate Option: Click the “Reactivate” button in the error banner, and log in when prompted.
  • Manual Login: Log out of all Microsoft 365 apps, close them, restart your system, and log back in.

If the problem persists, Microsoft recommends that administrators check the subscription status in the Microsoft 365 subscription management portal to ensure the subscription has not expired.
